The Citadel #012: How to Spot (or Become) a Great Tech Deacon in Your Community
Now that you know what a Tech Deacon actually is, the natural next question is: How do I find one? (Or… could I become one?)
The good news? You don’t have to look far or hire a specialist. Great Tech Deacons are often already part of your community — you just haven’t seen them through that lens yet.
Signs You’ve Already Got Someone
Look for the person who naturally:
Steps in quietly when something needs organizing
Has a calm way of solving small problems
Enjoys helping others feel comfortable and included
Is willing to learn new things without making it complicated
Shows care for both the details and the people behind them
They might be a teacher, a parent, a retiree, or a young professional. The role doesn’t require a tech degree — it rewards patience, reliability, and a heart for service.
What If That Person Could Be You?
If you’re reading this and thinking “This sounds like something I could do,” trust that instinct. Many of the best Tech Deacons started with very little technical background. What they did have was a desire to help their community connect and grow.
Starting small is completely fine. You begin by helping with one area, learning as you go, and building confidence over time. The role grows with you and with your community.
The Simple Path Forward
Pray or reflect on who might be a good fit (including yourself).
Have an honest, low-pressure conversation about the role.
Start with clear, manageable responsibilities.
Provide support and training so they don’t feel alone.
You don’t need everything figured out on day one. You just need the right foundation and the right kind of support.
That’s where Tech Deacon Consulting shines. We help communities of all sizes identify potential Tech Deacons, define the role clearly, and provide practical guidance so the person (or people) stepping into it feel equipped instead of overwhelmed.
The Citadel will keep giving you these gentle next steps. If you’re ready to move from “maybe” to “let’s try this,” we’d be honored to walk alongside you.
You might already have exactly what your community needs. Sometimes it just takes seeing it — and supporting it — in a new way.
